Wayne Holt Baxter, 89, of Santee, South Carolina, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2024.
Born in Chester, PA, Mr. Baxter was the son of the late James H. and Carrie E. Baxter. He was a graduate of Glen-Nor High School and received his BS from the University of Delaware in 1957 and an MS from the University of Tennessee in 1963.
A beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather he was a resident of Santee and Bradford Village for more than 37 years. Wayne was commissioned into the United States Army in 1957, serving overseas in Korea, Vietnam (twice), and Germany before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1979. Following retirement, he traveled the globe with his wife of 44 years, Dorothy, visiting all 50 states.
Wayne was a founding member of the Santee Presbyterian Church; he served as an AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteer for more than 30 years and helped coordinate home repairs for families in Orangeburg County whose homes were damaged following Hurricane Hugo. Wayne loved Santee, Bradford Village, the Trails End community in Chincoteague, VA, and his neighbors with all his heart.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy Baxter, and his brother Willard. He is survived by his children Dwayne Baxter and Diane Baxter Beard; his grandchildren Alex, Allison, Caroline, Catherine, and Matthew; his dear friend Nancy Tobul, and 12 nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on May 11, 2024 at 11:00 am at the Santee Presbyterian Church, 306 Bradford Blvd, Santee, SC, 29142. His interment will be private
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America in his name at myasthenia.org.
