Wallace "Wally" Edward Hughes, Sr., 87, of Summerton SC, died Sunday morning at his home in Summerton, SC. He was born August 22, 1924, in Vienna, Maryland, a son of the late Ira M. and Edith Hughes. Wally was a retired glazier from Atlantic Plate Glass, New Jersey, and served in the US Navy during WWII. He was assigned to an Auxiliary Minesweeper based in Newfoundland, and later was sent to England where he was assigned to an LST and ferried supplies and equipment to the French coast from D-Day to the end of the war. Later he was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard. He was also a lifetime member of Coast Guard Auxiliary and Kent County VFW Post 652 He promoted and played bluegrass music with his family and friends during his lifetime. Surviving are his wife, Bessie R. Clark Hughes of Summerton, SC; four daughters, Patricia Lewis of Maryland, Joanne Jeffers (Jim) of South Carolina, Janice Seymour (Ron) of Maryland, and Pamela Clawson (Bob) of South Carolina; a son, Wallace Hughes Jr. (Lisa K. Howard) of Virginia; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two brothers, Frances Hughes (Jane) of Florida, and Randall Hughes (Peggy) of Maryland; and a sister-in-law, Nellie Hughes of Maryland. He was predeceased by brothers, Ward Hughes (Mary) and Marion Hughes.
