HARLEYVILLE - Mrs. Virginia Hilton Baxley, 84, of Harleyville, widow of U.Z. Baxley, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at her home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Lee officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joey Dantzler, Everett Dantzler, B.W. Parker, Dr. John Cordray, Holcombe Bell, and Glenn Risher. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Harleyville Red Hat Hunnies, Tuesday Afternoon Book Club, and the Harleyville American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Baxley was born in Harleyville, a daughter of the late Arel Hilton and Jessie Clements Hilton. A graduate of Winthrop College, she was a retired school teacher having taught locally in the Harleyville-Ridgeville and North Charleston schools. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, a national teachers organization. Mrs. Baxley was an active member American Legion Auxiliary, the Tuesday afternoon Book Club, the Harleyville Red Hat Hunnies, and was one of the founders of what has become the Harleyville See Saw Daze Festival. She was a recipient of Charlie Hall's "Channel 5 Hall of Fame" and many other awards and commendations. Mrs. Baxley held offices in most of the organizations she supported. She was a life-long member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she especially enjoyed working with the seniors and the youth. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
