Robert Eugene (Bobby) Shingler Sr.

Robert Eugene (Bobby) Shingler, 80 of Harleyville, South Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.

Born on July 28, 1944 in Orangeburg, Robert was the son of the late Noralee Williams Shingler and Clarence M. Shingler.

Robert was a graduate of Holly Hill High School Class of 1962. While in school Robert drove a school bus for extra money that he used for his dates. Robert loved sports but especially golfing with his friends. He was an avid Gamecock fan and rarely missed a game. Robert was a member of The Historic Church of the Epiphany, Eutawville where he served as Sr. Warden and helped with many other duties.

Robert was employed with SPAWAR for over 37 years where he was proud of his time working on submarines. After retirement he worked for GLS for 12 years. Robert traveled the world over including Central America. Unable to speak the Spanish language he always had an interpreter. He received numerous awards and commendations for his work including the MARINA DE GUERRA from Peru and from the Naval Bases in Bolivia, Ecuador, Puerto Rico and many more. During one of Robert's trips, he was held at gunpoint in Venezuela where all his belongings were taken from him, but he continued with his assignments. Robert always said that was an experience he would never forget.

Robert is survived by his wife of 30 years Wanda Shingler; sons Bobby Shingler II (Bronwyn) and Paul Kaplan; daughter Bernadette Hodges (Terry); sister, Connie Sloan (Allen); grandchildren Brandon, Ayla, Morgan, Ethan, David, Elaina, Robert III, and Christian; one great grandson; aunts and uncles and the rest of his extended family.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents; daughter Robyn Velasco and brothers, David Shingler and Larry Shingler.

The family will receive friends on Monday, December 16, 2024 from 5-7PM at Avinger Funeral Home.

The service will be held Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at 1PM at The Historic Church of the Epiphany, 101 Porcher Ave. Eutawville. The burial will conclude at Eutawville Cemetery.
