Robert Charles (Bob) Horne of Sandridge Community, Ridgeville, S.C., passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 29, 2018, age 82. He was born in Miami, Fl., the only child to the late Michael Alexander and Mary Jane Horne. After high school, he attended Florida State University, where he was a member of their acrobatic circus. There, he met the love of his life, Jo, who played the clarinet in the band. They married and he then continued his daredevil life in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and once held a jump record with 272 recorded jumps. After his military service, he traveled the U.S., building roof trusses which brought the family to S.C. Shortly after that, he became employed with the U.S. Customs Service, later becoming a Firearms Instructor and was part of numerous covert operations as a Senior Supervisory Inspector, retiring after 42 years of service. He co-founded the Omar Shrine Keystone Kops, was a Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. He also sang in the Sandridge 1st Baptist Church Choir. He enjoyed farming and country life, reading Louis L'Amour novels and most of all his family.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Jo, who passed away in 2013 and is survived by children, Steven, Vicki, Kelly; grandson, Chris (Jessika); great granddaughter, Madison and family friend, Colleen Santiago, whom he always referred to as daughter #3.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 at Avinger Funeral Home on Thursday, October 4, 2018.
Funeral services will be held at Sandridge First Baptist Church at 2 pm on Friday, October 5, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and Heartland Hospice.
