Josephine "Joe" Coker Adkins, 86 of Cross, South Carolina, wife of the late Edgar Adkins passed away on Monday, February 10, 2025.
Joe was born on November 1, 1938, in Little River, to Ruby Halks Coker and Johnny Coker.
Joe was first and foremost a loving wife, mama, maamaa and friend. She loved the Lord and always strived to be closer to him and to be the person he would have her to be. In younger years, Joe was an avid cook. There were always three full meals daily and a feast on Sunday which often included the preacher. She was especially known for her handprint biscuits and fried chicken. Earlier in life she enjoyed gardening, puzzles, and playing card games. Christmas was her favorite holiday. There were never enough trees, they could even be found in the bathrooms. When her grandchildren were small Christmas night at her house included a visit from Santa on his way back to the North Pole. In her later years as her physical health declined, she enjoyed watching TV and visits from friends and family.
Joe is survived by her children Eddie Adkins (Betty), Betty Joe Sheldon (Larry), Thomas Adkins (Cathy), Peggy Sweatman (Hamlin), Jim Adkins (Kathleen), and John Adkins (Kim); a daughter-in-love Joy Lindsey; two adopted daughters Debbie Searles and Donna Maxwell (George); sister, Alma Isgett; 26 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and 18 great great grandchildren: and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was predeceased by her husband, parents, her first born Deborah Jordan, a son Warren Lindsey, daughter Linda Buras, sisters Janie Dell Miles and Emma Lee Hartless, and brothers Johnny Coker and Charles, Doug, and John Cameron.
Those honored to serve Joe as pallbearers Jamie Adkins, James Adkins, Mark Adkins, Ivey Sweatman, Russell Hawkins, Bailey Adkins, Mathew Adkins, Justin Crawford, Brandon Crawford. Johnny Adkins and Jonathan Brown will serve as honorary pallbearers.
A note of appreciation is given to attendants Donna Berthea, Donna Johnson, and Lula Mae Moultrie.
