Johnnie Ann Gentry Carroll, 73, of Holly Hill, South Carolina, wife to Joseph (JC) Carroll, entered into eternal rest Saturday, August 21, 2021, surrounded by her family. Born September 9, 1947 in Charleston, SC, Johnnie Ann was a daughter of the late John Lewis Lyerly and Margaret Spring Lyerly.
Johnnie Ann was a member of the First Baptist Church of Holly Hill. She was founder of the Just Older Youth (JOY) Group, Assistant Leader of the BeeG’s girls’ youth group, passionate supporter of church missions in support of Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, The Hebron Colony/Grace Home and the Ronald McDonald House. For 24 years, Johnnie Ann hosted Easter Sunrise Service at her home at Redbank. She truly loved her church family and the friendships built through 47 years of servant leadership at church and throughout the Holly Hill community. She never met a stranger and considered the friends of her boys and many others as her sons and daughters. How she treated everyone with dignity and respect is a testament of her character and that what truly matters in life is how we live and love as we navigate our “Dash”.
Johnnie Ann is survived by her husband JC of the home, sons John Thornton Gentry, Jr. (Katherine) of Athens, GA, Justin Scott Gentry (Elaine) of Chapin, SC, and Jason Ryan Gentry (Barrett) of Denver, NC, stepson Joseph Thomas Carroll (Nora) of Midlothian, VA, stepdaughter, Deborah Carroll White (Mark) of Lexington, SC., She was Mimi to Anna Kathryn Gentry and Caroline Pope Gentry of Athens, GA, Cameron Anne Gentry and Thornton Scott Gentry of Chapin, SC, Ella Ryan Gentry and Margaret Victoria Gentry of Denver, NC, Christopher Joseph Carroll, Jacob Liu Carroll, Sidney Marie Carroll, of Midlothian, VA, Savannah White Roof (Grayson), Columbia, SC and Joseph Caleb White of Lexington, SC., her sister Louise Lyerly Shaw of Charleston, SC and many nieces and nephews from the Carroll, Gentry, and Lyerly families along with her beloved pet, Gabe. In addition to her parents, Johnnie Ann was predeceased by her first husband John Thornton Gentry, Sr.
The family will receive friends Thursday, August 26, 2021 from 9am-10:45 AM at the First Baptist Church of Holly Hill. Services will follow at 11 AM. Burial will be at 2:30 PM at Carolina Memorial Gardens, 7113 Rivers Ave., Charleston, SC.
