SANTEE - Mrs. Carlotta "Cookie" Sutphin Metzendorf, 85, of Santee, widow of Robert Henry "Bob" Metzendorf, died Friday, May 22, 2015 at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill with funeral service 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Elloree with Rev. Buddy Locke officiating. Burial will follow in the Santee Baptist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jonathan Metzendorf, Brian Samec, Jay Sprankles, Chris Felder, Jacob Felder, and Ben Felder. Honorary Pallbearers will be Damon Felder, Daylon Walker, Shawn Martin, Mark Metzendorf, Larry O'Brien, Johnny Richardson, Joe Chiacchira, Doug Felder, Randall Smoak, Andy Tomberlin. Cookie was born in Virginia, a daughter of the late Zebrum Andrew Sutphin and Adalaid Raymond Manuel Sutphin. For many years, she and her husband were Kentucky Fried Chicken franchisees with restaurants in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. They got their start in Santee as owners of the former Gamecock and Delta motels. Cookie was a past secretary-treasurer for KFC Association: Southeast, a member of the Red Hatters, a charter member of the Swamp Fox Boat Club, and a member of First Baptist Church, Elloree. She enjoyed spending time in Maggie Valley, as well as entertaining, traveling, cooking, and shopping. In addition to her husband, Cookie was preceded in death by a son, Mark D. Metzendorf. Surviving are daughters, Linda (Doug) Felder of Utah, and Kathy Metzendorf (Gene) of Holly Hill; a son, Roy (Tandy) Metzendorf of Walterboro; daughter-in-law, Sabrina (Larry) O'Brien of Santee; grandchildren, Jennifer Felder of California, Jonathan Metzendorf (Jill) of Walterboro, Brian (Racheal) Samec of Tampa, Fla., Julie (Jay) Sprankles of Charleston, Kerri Metzendorf (Joe) of Elloree, Christopher (Robin) Felder, Carlotta Felder, Jacob Ross Felder, and Benjamin Felder all of Utah, Mark (Ginger) Metzendorf and Crista Metzendorf (Lloyd) all of Columbia; step-grandchildren, Ellis Ann and Grier Frank of Walterboro; 20 great-grandchildren; and a number of beloved nieces and nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to the caring and devoted staff at Magnolia's of Santee, the assisted living facility that she had come to know as home.
